How to Get Rid of the WinCodecPro Trojan

WinCodecPro is a fake codec sofrware which uses misleading strategies by alerting false or exaggerated problems on your computer rather than any legitimate ones to coerce you into purchasing their software.

Some of the Trojan displays alerts, among other things:

Fatal Error! The media system on your computer is corrupt. Update your video codec immediately to resolve this issue.

Warning! Fatal Error: Can’t play audio video files. Update your video codec immediately to resolve this issue.

Warning: Internal error! Media player has been corrupted. Immediately update your video codec to resolve this issue

Fatal Error: Windows can’t play the following media formats: AVI;ASF;WMV;AVS;FLV;MKV;MOV;3GP;MP4;MPG;MPEG;MP3;AAC;WAV;WMA;CDA;FLAC;M4A;MID. Update your video codec to resolve this issue.

Warning! Media codec has been destroyed. Risk of losing all your audio video files high. To resolve this issue, update your media codec immediately.

Warning: Critical media error! Your media driver is unstable. Video driver is corrupt and can no longer save your monitor settings. Driver is in critical mode. To restore your media drivers, update your video codec immediately.

Critical Media Error! Windows detected a fatal error in your media system. Your media codec has been corrupted. System can’t play audio video files until this issue is resolved. Update your media codec immediately.

These warnings are provided by the C:\Program Files\MediaSystem\wmptray.exe, this is the most important of the trojan. This malware also your desktop background, so that your computer has a serious flaw in your system and the media to update codec media. If you click the Refresh button on your desktop computer or security alerts in the taskbar, you are the Web site WinCodecPro. The Web page you can for $ 49 U.S. dollars for 30 days or $ 79 U.S. $ for a license for life.

Follow these instructions to remove WinCodecPro or WinCodec Pro

1. Download SmitfraudFix.exe and save it to your desktop.

2. Next, you have to start computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, keep tapping F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
  • When you are at the logon prompt, log in as the same user that you had performed the previous steps as.

3. Once in Safe Mode, double-click on the SmitFraudfix icon like the one shown below, make sure that all windows are closed.

4.When SmitFraudfix starts you will see a credits screen. Simply press any key on your keyboard to get to the next screen.

5. You will now see a menu as shown in the image below. Press the number 2 on your keyboard and the press the enter key to choose the option Clean (safe mode recommended).

6. SmitFraudfix will start removing the infected files. When it is done, it will automatically start the Disk Cleanup program as shown by the image below.

7. The Disk Cleanup process can take up to a couple of hours depending on your computer, so please be patient. When it is complete, it will automatically close.

8. When Disk Cleanup is finished, you will be presented with an option asking Do you want to clean the registry ? (y/n). At this screen you should press the Y button on your keyboard and then press the enter key.

9. When this last step is completed, you will be presented with a red screen stating that Computer will reboot now. Close all applications. You should now press the spacebar on your computer. A counter will appear stating that the computer will reboot in 15 seconds. Do not cancel this countdown and allow your computer to reboot.

10. download Registry Easy for other Registry repairing, cleaning errors and problems to optimize your PC.

I have all of the errors that you described and I ran the smitfraud test. However at the end I do not get the red box and when I restart my computer nothing changes. Help please!

admin, m having d same problem too. there is a pop up balloon dat shows the fatal error. wen clicked it directs me to a web calld vsCodecPro tat requires me to purchase sum softwares. At the same time, the speakers are not working. the audio n video files can b played bt there r no sound. so, does tis have any connection wif the vsCodecPro ting? Please help me out… my laptop is also running kinda slow because of this. I fear it wud hang any time.

I got the same problem as those people since 5pm on the 26. i’ve run norton 360 did’nt detect anything now i’m trying panda free online scan for now thats gonna take some time i’ve seen a lot of internet site talking about this virus it seem old and at the same time new since 2 anti-virus out of 3 so far did’nt find anything

hye admin, i fflwed ur earlier instructions by using smitfraud. it does delete the fatal error pop up. but still my speakers are not working. is it due to the previous problem? what shud i do? please help me out…thankz a lot!

Jenny, I have have the same problem!
I removed the wincodec pro virus using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but I still have no sound.
Device manager shows all hardware is running ok and all master volume controls are set fine.

Does anyone know what the wincodec pro virus does to the remove sound, and more importantly how I get it back!

Please help!
